We’ve covered a lot of material in this stage. In the next stage, we’ll be checking out specific examples of design patterns for both desktop and mobile. But before we do, I want to address one question about the four steps we’ve learned to take before implementing a design pattern: What happens if I can’t find an existing pattern that matches my users’ needs? If you find yourself in this situation, sketch out some new approaches. This is often where great innovation comes from.

    This swiping design pattern dates back to 2013 when it was introduced by 0:53
    the dating app Tinder. 0:58
    The initial launch of Tinder required users to tap onscreen buttons to 1:00
    rearrange profile cards, but the interface required too much slow thinking. 1:04
    Tinder's founders wanted to promote quick subconscious decisions, and they achieved 1:10
    this by innovating beyond the interface design patterns common at the time. 1:16
    Tinder's new interface asked users to swipe right if they were 1:21
    interested in a dating profile or swipe left if they were uninterested. 1:25
    If two users swiped right on each other, their profiles would be matched up. 1:30
    This new pattern proved to be easy to learn and addictive to use, and has been 1:34
    adopted by a number of apps both related and unrelated to matchmaking. 1:41
    Steve Krug, author of the web usability textbook, Don't Make Me Think, 1:46
