It's not clear to me if Node.js can be used as a stand alone method to operate with databases.

28,149 PointsYep, it can. For all intents and purposes Node is a server side language. Most common support for Node is the mongo database engine. But there are other packages for Node to work with MySQL or another flavor of db.
