What is the difference between internet and the web ? i thought they are one and the same thing what are the factors that differentiate them and how can they be distinguished from one another ?

The Internet is the whole infrastructure where computers are connected together, while the Web is a way of accessing information built on top of the Internet and it uses the HTTP protocol.
