I have no idea how I got a syntax error, it matches my other code perfectly.

I literally copied the same format of the script function in my index.html file and it's still wrong apparently.

index.html
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>JavaScript Basics</title>
  </head>
  <body>
   <script src="index.html"></script>
   <script src="app.js"></script>
  </body>
</html>
app.js

The instructions say: "Add the required HTML to load the external JavaScript file into the web page."

The only JavaScript file is app.js. The web page that you are adding the load code to IS index.html, you won't be loading that one.
