What is the difference between <%= 3*4 %> versus <% 3*4 %>?

from my understanding, <%= 3*4 %> will print 12 but <% 3*4 %> won't.

I just want to make sure I have a solid understanding. What are the differences, and when should one be used over the other?

# Prints whatever is between the <%= XXXXXXX %>, that is why you see 12 when using <%= 3*4 %>
<%= 3*4 %>

# For this it just executes the code that is between <% XXXXXXXXXXX %> but does not print it
<% 3*4 %>
