what is the difference between the console and terminal ?

The terminal lets you interact with your computer as a whole (although that doesn't really do it justice). Your console, on the other hand, is a bit like a REPL (read-eval-print-loop).

Sometimes your terminal and console are one in the same. So say you had a python file that printed something (a string for instance). In your terminal you'd run your file with the command...

python <name of file>

And the string would be printed to the console (which in this case is the terminal). Once the end of the file/program had been reached, you would regain access to your terminal, where you could enter the command...

mkdir new_directory

Which would create a new directory in whatever directory you are currently in, but you could not do that in a console.
