Sometimes there’s simply not enough work to fill a portfolio. We’ll build from the previous video of identifying the Portfolio Gaps and react by creating projects that will best fill those gaps.
New Terms:
- Skills Gaps -- the difference in the skills required on the job and the actual skills possessed by the employees.

We just established a way to go about
identifying gaps in your portfolio.
0:00
But what can you actually do about it?
0:05
Well, lots [LAUGH] actually.
0:09
Long before the existence of photo blogs,
0:11
my college studio mate
became Internet famous.
0:14
He did this by creating a series of
self-governed projects with extremely
0:18
strict parameters.
0:22
One of the projects was just him
uploading to a website a daily photo of
0:25
a tractor-trailer stencil typography
that showed the length of the trailer.
0:30
53 feet, for 53 straight days.
0:36
He plainly enough called it 53 feet.
0:40
Here's what he did so very right.
0:43
He created self-imposed parameters,
like time and restrictions on content.
0:46
And then he maintained
the discipline to execute it.
0:50
Another example,
world-famous hand letterer Jessica Hische
0:54
created the Daily Drop Cap,
where every day for
0:59
100 days she posted an ornamental
capital letter of her making.
1:02
Here's the thing, just because you're
missing a client-based project
1:09
to showcase some of your skills
doesn't mean you're stuck.
1:13
Instead, take some initiative,
and you can just do it yourself.
1:16
Especially if you call out that
you created the project and
1:22
explain the parameters and
the discipline that it took to execute it.
1:25
In cognitive behavior therapy, there's a
behavior modifier called fake it till you
1:30
make it, and there's likely a good chance
that you've heard that phrase before.
1:35
You absolutely have
permission to fake it here,
1:39
meaning you can create
projects that aren't real.
1:43
However, you have to be sure that you're
communicating to your audience why you're
1:48
faking it, because that's
actually what makes it real.
1:52
Is it to show off how you've
grown in a hard skills area?
1:57
Or are you creating a project
as the result of a past manager
2:01
pointing out a skills gap?
2:05
Which is the difference in
the skills required on the job and
2:07
the actual skills
possessed by the employees.
2:11
No matter the inspiration for
2:15
your self-made projects,
approach them with conviction.
2:16
Make them both enjoyable and
challenging for you.
2:20
After all, this is how you
show potential employers and
2:24
clients how you like to work and
what inspires you.
2:28
I'm excited to see you in the next stage,
where we'll look at how and
2:32
what to write to describe
the work in your portfolio.
