The COUNT function lets you determine how many numbers are in a group of cells. It only counts the cells that actually contain a number, so empty cells (or cells with text) are ignored in the count.

The count function will tell you
how many cells you have selected.
0:00
It does not sum up the numbers.
0:03
It tells you how many there are.
0:05
Sometimes you may have a group of cells
that contain numerical and text values.

Here we're looking at
a sheet that has months and
0:12
the total number of transacted
sales that occurred in that month.
0:15
Let's look at count in
the context of this spreadsheet.
0:18
So, I'm selecting, All 12 months,
and it returns back 12.
0:23
It's not the sum or the total of all
the sales that occurred over the year.
0:32
It's the number of cells
that have been selected.
0:36
This is a simple example.
0:39
But notice that if I
change this formula so
0:41
that it selects column A as well,
the value doesn't change.
0:44
That's because even though there's
24 cells that have been selected,
0:49
it shows 12 because there's
only 12 cells with numbers.
0:54
Sometimes I use count to spot check that
I've selected the right amount of columns
0:57
or rows.
