Currently am a federal employee, Grade 8 step 2. There is now where to progress in my current position. I need a left or change. I am just not sure which area of study to focus on

Welcome, and what a unique background to bring into tech! A MA in Criminal Justice and Safety Studies actually opens up some really interesting directions here. A few paths worth considering:

Cybersecurity is probably the strongest natural fit. Your background in safety, risk, and federal systems maps directly onto the thinking you'd do in this field — threat assessment, policy, incident response. Treehouse offers college credit through our UPI partnership (CS 270: Cybersecurity). Many federal agencies actively recruit people who combine tech skills with a security/justice background.

Data/SQL is another solid angle. Federal work generates enormous amounts of data, and being able to query, analyze, and visualize it is a skill that translates across agencies and into the private sector. The SQL track is very approachable as a starting point.

Python is worth layering in either way. It's the backbone of both data work and a lot of security tooling, and Treehouse's Python track starts from zero.

If you're looking for lateral mobility within federal service, Cybersecurity is probably your clearest path to a higher GS grade — there's real demand and a pipeline through programs like CyberCorps. If you're open to leaving federal work entirely, Python + data skills open up a lot of private sector doors.

I hope this helps!
